Default Stolen Ranger: Kitchener man charged after 2 police cruisers struck by stolen truck

A Kitchener man is facing several charges in connection with a high-risk takedown on Highway 401 in Mississauga earlier this week.

Police say at around 5:50 a.m. on Tuesday, an unattended pickup truck was stolen from a Cambridge gas station.

Police say the owner of the truck attempted to give chase but eventually lost track of the vehicle. A Good Samaritan who saw the incident unfold began pursuing the suspect in his own car, police say

That person then called 911 and followed the pickup truck all the way to the GTA, updating police on its location.

Shortly before 6:30 a.m., officers attempted to block in the vehicle in the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 near Winston Churchill Boulevard. While trying to evade capture, police say the suspect collided with two cruisers and a transport truck.

The male driver was taken into custody at the scene and no injuries were reported.

Police say Eugene O'Dell Gehiere, 32, has been charged with theft of a vehicle over $5,000, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, obstructing a peace officer, possession of property obtained by crime, flight while pursued by a peace officer and driving under suspension.

Stealing a car is stealing a car. Why does in matter if it's valued above or below $5,000?

Agreed. Kind of like how if you get caught stealing you won't do time if the stolen valuables amount to less than $1000. Stealing is stealing

I'll grant you the value topic does seem odd when it comes to automobile theft...I'm not sure how many states here have 'grades' of automobile theft charges (I'm talking solely the act of taking it - not additional charges that are born from it)...but this is in Cannnadadda - so all bets are off!

When is comes to 'theft' charges in general - it creates a slippery slope if every theft should be treated exactly the same...

Dilemma: 8 Year old steals candy from the corner store vs. grown man that steals the entire register from the corner store. Tough case to make that both should get the same punishment....

Different charges essentially permits utilizing a "sliding scale" when it comes to punishment & associated fines.

The 8 year old will have life in prison to think about what she did.

Canadian Criminal Code
- theft UNDER $5000 = summary conviction or indictable offence with imprisonment not more than 2 years
- theft OVER $5000 = indictable offence with imprisonment not more than 10 years

Ahh that makes sense. So if I understand correctly it's not the fact that he stole a vehicle over $5,000 necessarily. It's that he stole SOMETHING over $5,000. Doesn't matter what the object is, just in this case it was a vehicle.

Would be curious to know what all goes into valuing a vehicle in in these cases. "Sir, the carfax report shows the vehicle had a salvage title, looks like we have to reduce the charges"

That would make sense to me as well - basically similar to here in 'Merica.

Yep and $4,999 would be the 'sweet spot' for the defense attorney...lol

I think the real question here is, why was the criminal dumb enough to steal a bright yellow Ranger? Not like they're speed demons either.

He thought maybe he was gonna have to do some light hauling, maybe tow a small trailer, but not a big one, during his get away...maybe minor off roading, nothing serious...
