it's a ford thing. i think all of them start to whine a little by about 120k miles or less.

good news though - even if it does go out, you can still steer

Out of curiosity, would it be hard to pull one off of an explorer and fit it on a ranger? Seems like they'd be similar. Every one I see driving through parking lots are silent. No threadjack intended.

If you ever have to replace it dont buy an after market spend the extra money and get one from Ford, trust me on this one.

I heard about the aftermarket junk. Louder than a worn out stock unit. I'm going to try and get some numbers or head to a JY and see about pulling one from an Expo. It drives me nuts, hearing that thing wine all the time. Had to spend a bunch of money on a louder stereo to keep my peace of mind.

Fellas, may I get some advice please.
Just had my 98 pump replaced, it through the belt, and after replacement the whine from the belt is unbearable. Love the shop I took it to so wanted a second opinion on Duncan & Sons work. Just need to understand how common it is for the whine from the belt to start immediately after. Upon my examination it looks like the belt tensioner might have been bent. Is it possible to bend this?
I am guessing this bend is causing the belt to "wiggle" and cause the squeak.
I appreciate the input. Thank you.
