Angry bad frame

have a 2001 2 wheel drive, short box, 4 banger, 5 speed. found out a couple of weeks ago that rear shackle hangers were rotted off. went to local dealer to purchase hangers, shackles and bolts, etc. parts guy said that this is "normal". rotted parts on frame is considered "normal"? found a guy to replace parts for $150.00. he did a nice job but now we found that frame ends where bumper bolts on is also rotted along with crossmember for gas tank. anyone else had similiar problems? if so, have they ever received any satisfaction from FORD? truck has 94,000 miles. want to get another ranger next year but now i am leary. this is my third one and did not have problems with the first two. (as far as i know.)

HELP!!!!

1st question where are you from?

If you live in the Great North or North East all I can say is prevention is key. I know people from there that wash the underside of the truck once a week due to the amount of salt applied to the roads.

ya i live in MI...where people love to salt the roads. b/c of the salt, my frame rotted through and cracked on both sides right by the shock mounts. i had it tig welded by a professional welder. once i got the truck back, i took off my bed and i painted the whole frame with POR-15...i would reccomend doing this to your frame and new shackles to prevent any more rust.

no flex. have a hole on each side of frame rails. almost put a fist through them. the guy who changed the hangers will put plate steel to fix the holes. don't know about crossmember yet.

anybody ever contact ford on this? i did, no help from them.

They wont take any resoponsability. This is due to the area you live in and the way they maintain roads in winter. I suggest you to get some por-15 and cover the frame in it. also maintainit during the winter by washing it weekly

You can always file a formal complaint @ http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov

Apparently enough people filed complaints about the Toyota Tacoma frame which resulted in a recall/buyback.

where are the main areas of rust problems on a ranger? i have a hole in the same place, that por-15 sounds promising.

had to do something. crossmembers were going and brake lines were on their last legs. crossmember for gas tank was almost eaten through. i know that it would have been too expensive to replace. hopefully the 2010 is going to be better. got a xlt 4x4. v-6 crew cab. rides like a caddy. only hope the gas mileage will improve. 18+ mpgs. too bad they do not make locking hubs. i know that would help. or do they? put a k&n filter on it and that helped. no need to post pictures. it looks like what is in their brochure. metallic blue. i like it so far. plus the rebates helped my decision. $$$$$$$

Smile Re: bad frame

I've had this problem on both my '93 Splash and my '00 Reg Cab. Having a background in CAD design I finally got around to doing something about it. I designed new C-Channel frame extensions that sister up against the rear frame, reaching from behind the axle to the end of frame/bumper. I am working on a new spare tire framework since the one on my '00 is non existant. Take a look at my ebay listing and let me know what you think.

Feel free to ask any questions if you have any.

Hopefully I can help save a few more Rangers from the junk heap!!

Dano
