Default Dorman Bushing install

I bought the dorman shackles with bushings to install onto the leaf springs,...How do you get the oversized bushing into the leaf?

You have the metal encased OE one correct? They have to be pressed in. Your best bet is to try using a c-clamp or something simular to press it into the spring eye...if that doesnt work, take it to a shop to have it pressed in. I ALWAYS get the 2 peice polyuerethane ones. They take 3 seconds to install.

MAKE SURE you have to old metal sleeve out from the old bushing!!!!

I'm beginning to think the Dorman is to be avoided, but the only 2 peice polyuerethane that I see is like $41 a set. Is that about right?

nothing is wrong with the dorman ones. i use them when i did my shakles and mounts all you do is press out the ould bushinf by using a c-clam and applying pressiure to the bushing. then with pressure applied you hit it with a hammer and it starts to move. install is the exact same way as just stated.

but if the bushing is to rusted in side the leaf i had to use a torch burn the rubber part out then use a cchisel to hammer away at the junks of old bushing till it was clean.

its not hard it just takes time

----------

on a side note. i love poly bushings i just didnt shell out for them cause the kit i bough came with the rubber/metal ones

41.00 is a great price for poly bushings...This will do BOTH springs all 4 eyes. I always stick with Energy suspension bushings myself...used them on my SAS project on my F150 and they were easy as hell. I think I paid upwards of $60 for the set though.

I can get the bushings out, (not too easy, but yeah, I see now the trick is to drill out or burn out the rubber surrounding the sleeve), but I cant get the new one IN. The Dorman bushing is STEEL and just oversized apparently. Tried smacking it with a hammer, but it just gets jarred in a big sideways, then the spring bounces so I cant get enough WHACK on the thing to get it to travel in.
Was just hoping to hear how some one else HAD ACTUALLY DONE THIS, cuz I feel like I'm re-inventing the wheel at each new step of this install. El Sucko man. :-(

I guess the next step is to discover where I might find a GIANT C CLAMP. How about a portable horizontal press? Any other freekin special tools required on this job I dont know about. Damn.
I love it when the instructions say, "Simply install the bushing". When you read that you know its going to take 7 ways of hell just to escape!

----------

Why cant the instructions read, "Biff the Crapp out of this thing until you scream, then call a pro. Oh, and give up your little dreams of self sufficient mo-cheez-mo, your a weiny", I mean damn! LOL!

Any parts stores should carry one. Hell, I have 2 or 3 lying around. Then again, I DO work in a suspension shop so all I gotta do is drop the spring and install the bushing at lunch the next day...then AGAIN, I always go with polyuerethane so I dont end up with these problems...lol

did you get the old bushing sleeve out?????

and with the clamp you just start the bushing with your hand so it lined up. put your c-clamp on and tighten in till you get resistence. Then with you hammer HIT THE LEAF SPRING WHERE THE BUSHING IS GOIGN IN! It takes awhile but each hit your c-clamp has to be re tightened and you just hit, tighten, repeat, over and over again till its in.

The sleeve is just barely small enough to fit in it has to be or else your driving dfown the road and the bushing will rotate all over hells half acre.

----------

hell in my garage i got 10 diffrent c-clamps

----------

tools required

a hammer
c-clamp bigg enough to go around each side if the leaf spring plus bushing
jack
jack stands

PAITENCE!!

I did this job at 2 o' clock in the morning one day cause i busted a shackle and ruined the old bushong gettin the bolt out. its not that complicated it just takes patience. you let the tool do the work for you

I dont have any such C clamps. I rented a 4" gear puller and stripped it REMOVING the old bolt and bushing from the leaf. (not sure how I'm going to explain that one)
I called, and they dont rent c clamps, but they will rent me a ball joint press, (c clamp), for $100.00.
I'm thinking Dorman sucks, Belltech 6400 plus $41 worth of poly bushings; PRICELESS!!! LOL! screw this.
