Unhappy broken shackle - is my truck dead?

It started out as an exciting day. I planned to rotate tires and replace rear brake shoes on my '99 2WD. It turned out that I didn't need to change the brake shoes, but I found that the shackle on the rear leaf spring on the passenger side had rusted out and broken. What's left of the shackle is sitting in the crook at the end of the spring. I gather that it's not too bad to change a shackle, but the brackets they bolt to which are riveted to the frame are not in very good shape, and the frame itself is also pretty rusted. Is my truck dead?

Looks a tad bit worse than mine underneath, it can be fixed i would think. Only thing is, once you get in there, more stuff might break and end up costing you more money.

Wow those Connecticut roads killed that chassis. My dad broke a shackle on one of his work vans and the chassis was rusted pretty bad and a suspension shop replaced it no problem for around $65 and this was pretty recently

That right there is why I am glad I live in the south! I'd love the snow, but not the rust lol.

This is VERY VERY common on any northern ranger, every single ranger I have owned I have had to replace them. 2 ways that make it easier, 1 take off the rear bumper... or take off the bed. the bed off is the best because it allows you more access.

Rock auto now carries the shackle and hanger instead of having to go to the dealer.

DORMAN Part # 722010

DORMAN Part # 722001

if you need the bolt in the leaf spring

HUSKY SPRING Part # SHB91645

and here is a whole poly bushing kit for the rear leaf springs

I'm looking at doing this in the near future as well before the above happens. How hard is it to get the leaf spring back into the hanger? As in am I going to have to fight it like hell to get it or is it pretty simple.

they're not that bad, pretty springy and can move with some effort. if you have 2 people, one can push the spring while the other aligns the shackle/puts the bolt in.

its very easy just jack up the frame on stands and you can manipulate the axle/leaf with the jack lol
