Default Re: broken shackle - is my truck dead?

Happily, my truck is NOT dead! I took it to a local mechanic who replaced both the brackets and shackles. The parts were readily available for about $120. He charged me for 3 hours of labor. I'm sure it would have taken me MUCH longer, lacking tools and experience. I tried loosening the bolts on the broken shackle, but I couldn't budge them. Thanks for the help. -- Jim

Bringing this back.

Sooo, i never did this yet and fucked myself, because one of my shackles snapped yesturday. I had to drive it like that and i guess i hit a bump to hard and snapped the other one too. >.<

I ordered belltech shackles already because i wanted them but heres my question. I want to replace all the hangers while im at it because they are getting iffy. Is this dorman part number 722010 the same for all 4 hangers or are they different because looking at it, they look different.

Where do i get the fronts?

Advanced has listings for 2 hangers but only one has a picture. One is $23.99 each:
Clicky

The other one is $32.99 each.
clicky It says Rear front, so i assume this is for the front of the rear spring, but you know what they say about assuming. haha

There are two hangers. The front is quite a bit bigger than the rear and thus the price difference. You an replace the fronts if you wish but I've only heard and experienced the rear hangers going bad. Both of my rear hangers and shackles have been replaced on the '98.

It can be fixed. I torched out the rivets on off my old one and bolted in a solid junk yard shackle/support from a donor truck. I used Grade 8 bolts to install.

autozone has them you can get a rear shackle with a bushing and thru bolts and hanger for about 53 bucks.... and to fix use the methods listed in earilier posts... either drill grind or if you have one handy and are good with it a torch......

I used a die grinder to grind off the rivet heads. Then knocked the bracket off. Center punched the rivet and drilled the center of the rivet out until I got to about frame depth. From there, you can just knock the rivets out with a hammer. Make sure you center punch the rivet so you don't drift off center and mess up the frame holes.

A 90 degree drill or drill attachment might make things a bit easier. My regular drill worked ok but it was a bit tight. Oh, and I used a 3/8" drill bit. All you want to do is weaken the rivet so you can knock it out. Anything larger and you risk messing up the holes in the frame.
