Question Soften the impact of bumps?

I have no experience with suspension.

My Ranger is rough to drive, even on some city roads. The manhole covers, cracks, and bumps I drive over can be felt much more than any other car I've ever been in.

For this reason I installed Gabriel shocks for the front and rear wheels. But the impact of the bumps on the road is still the same!

Would changing out the coils and leafsprings help? My goal is to make a softer drive. Right now I'm swerving around even minor potholes because it feels like they are just wreaking havoc on my Ranger.

first thing i would do would be to check all the suspension and steering components for wear, they will affect ride and handling more than anything in most cases. shocks help but only to an extent. there is a reason it rides different then any other car youve driven and thats because its not a car, its a truck and it has a truck suspension and they dont ride like cars.

I hadn't considered checking things like steering components. It is an old Ranger, so some of those parts are bound to be worn out by now.

Anyone know which specific components I should be checking that tend to wear out first?

An '88. I'd check all the bushings in the suspension, front and back. Old rotted bushings will keep your suspension from moving just like a worn out shock. Look at the ball joints that connect your steering linkage to the spindles for slop. Worn wheel bearings can feel like a suspension problem too.

Planned mods: 5.0 swap (got the donor already, it's nardly), 4/5 suspension drop(DONE), traction bars, 8.8swap, 3.55's w/LS . Auto to Manual conversion. Lots more in the works.

i would replace the 20-30 year old leafs and coils with new ones to be honest. check the steering bits and bobbles as well but its probably old saggy suspension bits.
