Default 99 ranger upper ball joint question

Hello all my " 9 lives " 99 ranger 2wd 2.5 coil suspension had an upper ball joint snap. I did take the upper control arm off. The bushings are fine and I want to is just replace the ball joint. NAPA and AUTOZONE do advertise a greasable ball joint for about $25.00 versus a $ 125.00 control arm. Has anyone pressed fit an old ball joint out and presssed another in. Im told it may be a snap ring that holds it in. Yes it would be easier to buy the entire control arm but I plan on keeping the truck for only another year. Want to get a supercab next time. Thank you

I, too, have a 1999 ranger, 2.5 L, 2wd, coil spring truck. I just did the ball joints yesterday. The joint in the upper control arm would not come out. First off, I couldn't get a press in there with the arm still on the vehicle, so I took the arm off and attempted to get the joint out and it just wasn't going to come out. And if it did, it would have damaged the arm anyway. I went to auto zone and picked up new control arms. There really seems to be a split between people who say it can be done and people who say it can't be done. Maybe Ford used two different kinds of upper control arms on 1999 rangers? I don't know.

Yea, I've heard of people who say they can be changed.. I wouldn't bother if a new control arm is out there. That sounds like the intended/correct way to replace it.

You torque them to 40-45 and you will have alignment problems.

Proper torque for the top bolts are 98 ft-lbs.

Torque for the pinch bolt is 35-46 ft-lbs.

As for pressing in/out upper ball joints, the only way I've seen it done is with a table top press, not the c clamp style.
