Default Replacing both front-end boots

I dropped my Ranger off to get the drivers side front wheel squeak (more like groaning, it was -bad-) looked at and the mechanic just called to tell me it's squeaking because both rubber boots have rotted and my grease has leaked/dried up around the ball joints. Replacing both inc. taxes and labour is going to be $672.

The squeak started off small and got louder and more grinding over the last couple of weeks, so drying grease makes sense I guess..... But I wasn't expecting that sort of pricetag!

Am I getting taken?

what boots? if its groaning it might be bearings... idk.. i think thats alot just for rubber boots tho..

then that might not be a bad deal ball joints over here in ga are about 100 so that and labor isnt that bad.

Turns out he cant get the ball joints off the control rods (think that is what he said) so he is replacing those as well and sticking to his quote as long as i pay cash

UPDATE:

Got the truck back and man does it ride better! I guess these things were giving problems back last year, I just didn't realise it till they started making noise. I took a look/feel of the old ball joints: felt like stirring oil covered sand, gritty as can be with rotted (not torn) rubber fragments where the seal used to be. They seemed to be welded to the control rods too. I guess the late owner was a shade-tree mechanic.
