02 ranger,2wd.can i change the upper balljoints or do i have to buy the hole a arm?

i know in my 98 i could change the upper ball joints. and from what i can tell from a quick glance online you should be able to do yours aswell. although if i were you while i was changing the upper i would go ahead and change the lower aswell. if for nothing else to save you from having to tear it all back apart again when you need to change the lower.

you have to buy the whole arm

Check out http://www.rockauto.com/ You may or may not be able to just replace the ball joint. I found just the upper ball joint for a 2002 Ranger 3.0 flex fuel (don't know what engine you have). They just might have what you're looking for. Good luck.

Be careful if you decide to heat the old ball joints. My cousin just told me how he almost dead from an exploding ball joint. What happened was he was heating the upper ball joint (I think it was upper) with a torch. The ball created an air tight seal inside the joint. The grease inside expanded and blew the ball out. He said it sounded like dynamite. Can't remember what it hit under his truck but he said it shifted it and eight of an inch (metal flange or something) bounced of that thing and dented the wall. It happened to quick for him to get scared or jump. Said it almost hit his head/face.
