Default Help changing shocks 1999 Ranger 2x2

Hi,
The other day my truck strted making a noise from the front left hand side. It sounds just door hinges that are rusty getting opened and closed. I hear it when I go over any bumps and when I turn the wheel. If I stand outside the truck and push down on the front panel on the left side and bounce it up and down I can really hear it loud. I am not sure it's the shocks that's making the noise but it seems like it might be. I also noticed this when I was inspecting the suspension. Should I replace this also? My truck has the big spring around the front shocks I don't have any special tools like a spring compression tool. Do I need that to replace the shocks and if so should I just take it in to get them changed?

mine has done it along with many others.... common ball joint problem making those sounds, this is not a "do it yourself" job... replace them and sway bar link bushings and you be good to go... the shocks them selves are easy to replace, no special tool required..

You were right it is not the shocks. I can see the upper ball joint is bad and I can hear the noise coming from there. Do you think it is a job I can do at home if I do not replace the upper ball joint by itself and just replaced the whole upper control arm?

You will need to replace the arm ( get the MOOG) this is all easy to do at home. Bad thing about a spring compressor when I did my there was barely enough room to get the tool out after the spindle was connected. Its not hard maybe 1-2 hrs each side, if you do get it go to Advance or something and rent the ball joint press tool for the bottom that way you dont have to take the arm off. The reason for the new arm is more then likely you dont have the press out top ball joint.

I had to replace mine a while back. Get the Moog brand. You wont regret it. Just jack it up and there are two cam bolts one on each side of the top of the control arm. Get you a breaker bar so you can bend the socket part to get to it easy. Impact does wonders. you will need 21mm and 22mm sockets. I had to replace my cam bolts. I got them for 28.00 a piece. (That was my cost). You'll need two for each side. And two come in a box. It will proly take you about an hr and a half give or take 2 hrs. Don't rush and give yourself plenty of time. If you need to take a break to calm your frustration then do so. And then get back to it. Do one side at a time.

I do a whole lot of these at work and they are something you can do yourself but the lower ball joints must be pressed in you can rent the tool but make sure that you seat them all the way if not it will be bad but the top is a whole control arm the joint is not changeable like dan said get a set of adjustable cam bolts and put them in when you change the arms because you will need to align it when you are done and a good alignment shop will tell you that you need them if you do this yourself and have any more questions pm me and i will give you all the help you need

I changed out just the top ball joints instead of the whole arm. My truck is a 2000. Would that make a diiference?

I dnt think this is true, they are pressed in and can be changed, I did mine.. some people choose what they think are the easiest route.. had no problem pressing them in and out and saved me money.. but I'm sure if you show up to a shop with complete a arm they will be happy, saves them time.. or easier to DIY if press isn't available

See I heard the same thing is it that some stock arms can be pressed? I went ahead and got new one but after I out them in I saved the old ones just to see I ended up twicking the arm when I tried to press it out. I soaked it, headed it froze it, even took all the paint and everything around it just to make sure there wasnt clip on it but the dang thing would not come out.
