Question Replacing the rack and pinion unit (please help)

Hello Everyone,

I have a 2001 Ranger Edge 2 WD and it was in a wreck. The rack and pinion unit got busted right in 2.(It looks like it got busted in the middle)
I was just wondering if anyone on here has ever had to replace a rack and pinion unit on a 2001-2005 Ranger with torsion bar suspension and if so what tools will I need?
The supply line was almost ripped out and it's leaking bad right at the rack. Does that line go all the way up to power steering pump?

Thanks in advance,

Brian

Yes you will have a pressure and return line. They are a bitch to change because they go thru the holes in the frame on a torsion bar truck. The easiest way is to swap it with no tie rods to make it as short as possible. The ps pump is also in the way when working the sector shaft around. Im not sure on the bolt sizes but they are big. I think the line is around a 16-18.

Thanks for responding to my message wvcat. I'm begining to learn that everything is harder to fix on the torsion bar suspension.
What is holding the rack on the steering shaft?
I'm assuming that I'll have to take the ps pump off if it's in the way.

(If anyone has a good used Chilton Manual for a 2001 Ranger I'd like to buy it.)

There is just a bolt thru the sector shaft, it should coma apart easily. I don't think you have to remove the pump but it will make it a little easier.

I removed the pinch bolt from the underside of the truck and the PS pump was way up above it.
Were you just trying to get me to remove the PS pump for nothing?

lol no when it comes to working the rack back & forth to get it out of the frame I think the top of the rack may hit it. I could be wrong...
