Default New Ranger= looks 10/10-ride 0/10 VERY HARSH

My new Ranger - 1998 XLT 225/70/15 86k, 6 owners, crash title (no carfax info), looks like brand new. Runs great - all functions perfect. On the highway it rides like crap, harsh, bounces so bad I can't adjust the radio. At Interstate speeds all bumps/seams are greatly magnified in the cab. Tire balance type small shakes at steering wheel start at 50mph. Shocks seem ok using old fender bounce trick (with difficulty I put my entire weight down at corners-fenders come right back no overbounce).

Had tires balanced to cure the shake which starts at 55 but didn't do anything. Steering is fine but I'm afraid to go over 65-70.

Worst case suspicion - suspension was modified (raised/lowered) then restoration to factory specs attempted but they used wrong coils.

Best case suspicion - everything is normal but I'm expecting too much. I've had several pickups which drove like a truck but maybe times have changed for the worse.

Suggestions?

Alignment is probably off. Running too much psi in tires? Check rear shocks and springs, it could have overload springs or something. Most Rangers i've driven are pretty smooth lifted, lowered and stock.

I would try putting a 300 - 500 lb. load in the box and take it for a spin... that should tell you if the suspension is too stiff, air pressure too high or the wrong shocks were installed. A four wheel alignment will do wonders for the shake in the front end...

There's no adjustment in the back, only the front. If a garage tries to sell you a four wheel alignment, go some where else.
