Several years ago, prior to parking my Ranger, I was told that a proper alignment could not be performed because there was too much play in the steering gear.

Does this sound right and if so, then could I assume that replacing the gear (along with the various other steering components) would then allow me to bring the steering back close to spec?

The answer seems obvious, but I had to ask.

Yes Parts wear out and alignments cannot be performed without replacing certain parts sometimes. But also yes if you replace those parts a good alignment shop should be able to get your Ranger perfectly in Spec again

Thanks for the quick response. I figure while I have the engine out, I may as well take care of that too.
