Default Jingly-Jangly sound while rolling down the road

Hey guys,

2006 FX4, 205k miles. Bone stock, including Alcoa wheels. Only thing "special" is the 31" BFG AT tires.

We've had the truck about two years, and we use it for hunting trips and the occasional trip to the yard for mulch or fill dirt. The drive train has always seemed pretty noisy to me, but lately it seems like it has gotten worse, and I'm wondering where to look first to try and track it down.

Rolling along at 20mph through the neighborhood, I can hear what sounds like silverware rolling around inside a steel pot. Not a grinding wheel bearing sort of noise - more high pitched like if you put some spoons into your dryer and ran it (though not quite THAT loud).

There is a ring to it that makes me think it might be driveshaft-related. The noise happens whether I'm coasting or driving, accelerating or slowing. There is no "clunk" to it - just a constant "jingle-jangle" while driving.

Sound familiar to anyone? Any ideas on what to check first?

Thanks in advance for the pointers!

First thing I would do is go under the truck when its cold and start tapping the exhaust system with a screw driver or something. In my experience "rattling" noises like you describe are often a broken heat sheild soewhere on the exhaust. Sometimes even a chunk of muffler or cat breaks lose inside the pipe as well. I would rule that out before moving on.

Good suggestion. It seems too constant to be exhaust (More like something rotating) but I値l definitely crawl around and check all the heat shields.

Is it manual or automatic?

That rules out clutch bearing issues! Other things that spring to mind are the timing chain or guides, or starter motor not disengaging. I still say check the exhaust first just to rule out the simple things.

Thanks again. Definitely not the starter motor. Doesn't sound like its coming from the engine compartment (and doesn't make the noise while sitting still, only when rolling).

It literally sounds like I'm dragging a couple of chains on the ground that are bouncing around and clinking into each other...

Some rangers have a harmonic balancer on the driveshaft, ive seen the rubber break apart leaving a bare metal ring spinning around on the driveshaft....

Your description in that other thread had me smiling; sounds exactly like what I知 trying to track down. And a loose part inside a brake drum would make EXACTLY the sound I知 hearing. Looks like I have a brake job coming this weekend since it needs one anyway.

Btw are he drums resurfaceable or are they throw-away like so many are now?

The drums are so cheap it hardly seems worth it to even bother with resurfacing anymore, but the only way to check if they can be resurfaced is to read the max diameter number stamped on the drum and then measure the inner diameter of the drum in several locations. If the diameter is less than .020 from the max diameter the drums should not be turned and should be replaced. Drums should never actually be turned to the max diameter or there will not be enough material left for normal wear.
