Replace rear shock
I need to replace my passenger side rear shock. Do I even need to lift the truck with a jack? I don't have one.
Do I just need a ratchet set or is there more to it? When I get the new shock on there, how many turns does the bolt get so it's tight? I don't want to strip it.
Why are videos saying spray the new shock with grease (what kind)?
I've never done this before but want to learn.

Re: Replace rear shock
You need a jack. also replace both shocks. Job is not hard to do. 1 bolt on top & 1 on the bottom. Hit them with some pentrating oil first.
I don't know about the spraying the shock with grease but a little grease on the bolts before installing is a good idea.
When you tighten the bolts you need to snug them down fairly tight. Can't tell you number of turns but Torgue values are about 20 foot/pounds top & 45 to 50 on bottom. You will notice the rubber compressing. If no torque wrench then tighten till rubber compresses same as what old shock was and do an extra turn.

Re: Replace rear shock
Both shocks have 60k on them (Bilstein). One got damaged when my muffler fell off. Do both still need to be replaced? I can order one more shock if I have to.

Re: Replace rear shock
60k is about when you should start replacing them anyways. but yes, even if they had just 30k miles on them, I would replace both, they are like tires or brakes, or any other thing on the car, you do it in pairs, so that things wear evenly, and are more predictable.
as far as needing a jack or what ever, mine is a 98 4x4, stock height, I can crawl around under there, and have PLENTY of room to work. when I replaced mine, I didn't bother with jacking it up. The only reason I jacked up the front is because I had to take the front tires off to get proper access. Rear I didn't need to do that. so for the rear, it depends on how much room you have to work, if its enough.

Re: Replace rear shock
1. Always replace your Shocks in pairs
2. Always use a Floor Jack and Jack Stands under the rear axle as you will need to remove the rear wheels and tires for EASIER access to the shock mounts.

Re: Replace rear shock
EHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
DO always replace suspension components in pairs, and unless its new, tires the same.
and since your driveway isnt under OSHA shop regulations. for what you're doing is very basic and does NOT require taking any wheels off or super difficult things. I've personally changed out shocks all around on my truck ON THE TRAIL with no jack or stands on level ground. The only "Jacks" used were the ones standing around holding a beer watch me work..!
Now normally I would NEVER advocate doing anything that would cause harm or injury to anyone working on something, especially being stated under a car/truck but unless a meteor the size of a Volkswagon bug slams into the top of your truck while you're under it.. It is NOT going to teeter or fall in any one direction to cause you harm.
Yes I'll say err on the caution of is a BEST PRACTICE..
The springs hold up your truck and the springs are what you ride on.. NOT the shocks, the shocks ONLY control movement of the springs when the springs are not at rest.
The ONLY time that will change is when you're dealing with front IFS and the shock/strut is a part of a coil assembly. Then you would have to raise and lift up the vehicle, secure it, remove the component and in some fashion of a spring compressor separate the two pieces accordingly.
As far as tq of the bolt German spec or Redneck spec is generally sufficient but if you absolutely need/want a TQ spec for a strut mount bolt i am sure myself or someone here can get that to you ASAP. out of a 1-10 scale the rear shocks on these trucks should be a flat 2 of difficulty factor.
If you can change a bedroom door handle out, you could do this with flying colors.. its that easy of a task with a basic socket set.

Re: Replace rear shock
Computersoc PLEASE don't work on your own vehicle to avoid self inflicted bodily injury. Have a tire shop do the work.

Kinda defeats the purpose behind "learning" if one consistently refers to there wallet rather than knowledge base of others for the sake of understanding dont you think?

Re: Replace rear shock
I'm curious when, or even *IF* mine have ever been done (147k)
I can't say it's worth putting really nice ones on mine as it's a very occasional driver, but i don't want anything worse than OEM.
Is it easy to tell if they're OEM? and what's a good OEM quality replacement, or better, that isn't Bilstein prices? (i'm assuming OEM are way over priced?)

Here is a search of his previous posts then you will understand why I posted the reply. I don't like to see anyone who is completely mechanically inept hurt themselves.

I almost never buy OEM, since they are typically the exact same as after market but for 2x the price because you buy from a ford dealer.
I put these on mine, and are quite happy:
Front - http://amzn.to/2eHnewj
rear - http://amzn.to/2w3xLUZ
They have about 8k miles on them, so I cannot say how they will be in another 50k miles, but I like them now.
shocks should be replaced after ~60k miles, if you have even close to that that you've put on, then I would just go ahead and replace.
