Default bad shake between about 45mph and 80mph

Howdy friends,

I have a 2000 Explorer XLS w/ the 4.0 SOHC, 4x4, automatic. 120k miles.

Last week I did some work to the truck for a 500 mile round trip drive. I found I had a wicked worn front passenger wheel hub, so I replaced that. I also found I needed a new passenger sway bar link, so I also replaced that.

After replacing those parts, I had a BAD death wobble on the hwy. I immediately ran to the tire shop, as I suspected the worn out wheel hub/bearing caused the tire to wear out. I was right, and ended up with 4 brand new tires.

While having the tires serviced, I took a look around the truck and found my back passenger brake is metal on metal, so I'm planning to replace that this weekend. I also found my back driver axle seal is leaking, and the diff was low. The tire shop topped me off for my trip.

Anyway, the issue now is that I still have a shake at highway speeds of about 65+. I also feel a shake around 45. I feel more in the seat than the steering wheel, but it's still present in the steering wheel. It almost feels like unbalanced tires, but obviously I JUST had those tires installed. That doesn't rule out the issue entirely of course.

Are there other components I should be checking besides the tires?

Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to make sure I had as much up to date info to aid in troubleshooting the issue.

Cheers!

U joint possibly, or if the brake caliper is stuck and warped the rotor it could transfer

I guess it could be a trans or engine mount, or the engine not running smoothly.

Alot.of.could bes

I bet it's probably in a tire though.

What tires did you get?
How did they balance them?
Did they check the runout on them?

Tires are a Cooper StarFire 340 I believe. I didn't see exactly how they were balanced/runout check.

I don't expect these are spectacular tires, but I really am a bit concerned that I got taken for $325 on total junk.

The slightly ironic part of all this, is that my plan was to fix a few thigns to make my ride better on my trip. It turns out I actually made the truck *safer* and have ended up with *worse* comfort. Just typical of my luck though, lol

I don't know anything about that particular tire but generally cooper's are decent tires but I've noticed that they are never very round and they don't balance that well.

I run cooper lsx on my Mariner, (came with it) and I rebalance them every oil change to keep the ride nice. They are always way out of balance.

I'd take it back and watch them check the balance and watch for a hop in the tires

Thanks man. I'll be honest, I didn't see them spin the tires on a machine, so I'm wondering if they just used one of those bubble balance things. I'll head back to the tireshop and have them rebalance, and if I still feel something is off, I'll head to discount tire and pay for a balance to see what happens.

Are there any weights on them?

Maybe they never balanced

there's a couple weights, but are they old? who knows. Maybe the left the old weights on, and got it "close enough" or something.

I hate it when people work on my vehicle. I had 2 separate places do work on the truck that day, and so far I've found where the quick lube screwed up (shocker, right?) causing me a lean condition; and now the potential for the tire guys to have screwed up too. It's somewhat maddening paying good money for half ass'd work.

Sure, small things, but if I were less handy, I'd have needed to take the truck in to figure out the lean condition caused by the lube guy.

I'm hoping to get some work done this weekend. Rear axle seal, possibly axle bearings depending on how ambitious I get. Also rear brakes (need to fix axle leak before putting new brakes on), and may try and work a spill and fill in on the transfer case since the fluid is looking ick.

How about universal in the front drive shaft?

I just had a Nissan Pathfinder in the shop for a vibration and she had also bought the tires from another shop I found a universal joint about to fall apart

I considered that possibility too. I will give that check next time I get a chance. My front pinion seal is leaking, so there's another breadcrumb. Fluid is up to proper level, but u-joint wear/failure could maybe contribute to seal wear.

I had a tire with excessive road force cause a hop between 38-43 mph.
I've also never had a problem with Cooper tires. I have Zeon RS3-As on my Mustang and I had a set of STTs on my first truck. Never a problem.
