Re: Leaf Springs
From my spring change I found there is three different springs available out there.
850/1050 pound rating for those who use the Ranger as a daily driver and don't haul
1250 pound rating which is OEM
1750 pound rating
I went with the 1250 pound springs which ran me about $124 a side from a local spring shop. They wanted an additional $104 a side plus hardware if I wanted them to do the work.
If your springs are original, the shackles and hangers are probably just about rusted out. They will need to be replaced with new ones. The hangars are rivited in and will need to be ground off with an angle grinder so you can drill out the centers of the rivits and knock them out.
One piece of advice from experience, do not tighten the u bolts more than hand tight before setting the truck on the ground. I had problems getting the axle to line up by tightening up the u bolts before hand. I also found that after market u bolts don't like to be torqued more than twice and will strip out. I read either on the paperwork that came with the u bolts or in the Haynes manual that the u bolts will need to be checked after driving the truck around for about 500 miles.
