Been researching that, and apparently not a DIY job though, at least to get it right. Lots of little ways it can go wrong if you don't have the proper tools and expertise to get the lash and tolerances correct.

I will keep an eye out for a 373 axle though. I think the 410 would be a bit overkill for my needs.

That Scamp is still looking good, but it sure would be nice to find a used one. I really hate paying sticker for ... well ... anything, as evidenced by my 20 year old truck. ;-}

I have a popup. It's not very big but I pull it with my 2.3 with 31s and 4.10 gears. It pulls awesome!! I honestly can't really tell it's there with my truck. About the only thing that I can say that about lol. image-208274594.jpg It's nothing special I don't even know what year it is. I would like to say late 70s? Early 80s? But it gets the job done. It fits 4 good and has a built in cooler lmao. No sink or anything like that. Has ac. Only thing with a popup if you are getting used check the roof and make sure it doesn't droop. I didn't and my inner roof was rotted. I built a cage for the roof out of aluminum that's bolted through and brought the roof back up and made it solid.

My popup measures 10 ft closed and 18ft open. I was looking at getting rid of it and getting a scamp. But for the price I'll keep my popup. Payed $700 for it. And even though it's old the frame looks brand new. No rust anywhere no surface rust. Also axle is new with new bearings and such. It needs some work. But hey it gets the job done.

After careful deliberation and weighing all the pros and cons ... the winner is ...



14x10 "instant up" for a couple hundred bucks including the heavy duty rainfly. Add a porta john, dual fuel camp stove, cooler, and portable solar shower, and I've got pretty much everything the egg could give me - including the kitchen sink! All for around $500. Already got a good camp cot and aerobed that fits, so seems like a plan.

By the time I priced out a flyweight camper that my lil toy truck could handle, not to mention improvements to the truck just to handle a flyweight, it just didn't add up. Even a well used trailer would set me back several thousand - assUming I could find one. You gotta be quick on the trigger as they go fast. I priced out a new one, and the Coleman tent with all the extras will save me about $12K ... that's a lot of beer and gas ...

That also saves bucks on upgrades to the Ranger. I'll still keep an eye out for a 373 axle as that should give me a bit more grunt when needed. Looks like the shocks are original, so I expect to replace those shortly also ...

Next step is picking up the gear and figuring out some sort of roll out rack for the bed. I've got the Pendaliner already ...



... and I bet those grooves would work nice with some garage door hardware for rollers ... The grooves on the tailgate match the bed, so I could even set up a camp stove and such for ... er ... tailgating ... I've seen a couple similar setups that just look darn convenient, and no worries about burning the tent down ...

I have an 04 edge with the 3.0 engine. I recently bought a 1992 Coleman Sequoia pop up camper which has a GVWR of 1995. Trailer has a closed length of 15'3" and open length of 22'8".

Granted I dont fill up the 10 gallon fresh water tank and it has no discharge tank. With all the other gear I have in thee, it might be close to the GVWR of 1995. We usually just have food, clothes and all other camping gear inside the camper (ie dishes, blankets, towels, buddy heater, you know camping gear). I dont truly know what the weight is when I have it loaded for a trip as I have not taken it across a scale. I do have two 20 lb propane tanks mounted on the tongue.



Anyhow, my point is that it is a nice sized camper that will sleep at least 5 people. And it is fairly light weight. My ranger will pull it with no problem. Even up and through the mountains of VA. Most of the time I am passing full size trucks that are somewhat struggling pulling their larger trailers up the mountains. Not to mention in the bed of the tuck there is the loaded ice chest, fold up chairs, an additional table that I set up outside, and a instant pop up canopy and whatever else we might throw in the bed.

Oh and I do have a Reese hitch. I do not use the bumper. I dont think I would ever try and tow anything with the bumper hitch on this truck.

Everyone talks about the 3.0 being a 3.slow, well I have had no problems with my 3.0 not even when I pulled a 4x6 cargo trailer that was moderately filled from Richmond to Blacksburg VA while moving my son to his apartment at VA Tech.

This link http://www.fordf150.net/specs/04ranger.php has towing capacity listed for 2004 models. Though it says that my truck is good for 3980 I do not think it would be a wise choice trying to pull that much. It might be a real slow pull on flat ground let alone mountains. I am sure you can find something like this for other models.

Would ya believe 480 pounds dry weight? I think even my basic ranger can haul that much around. Even using the bumper hitch. With the 3.45 axle.

That's freaking awesome

Found a neat video on YouTube showing how fast it sets up and tears down.


Mine is a Plus, so add a minute or two for setting up the extra sleeping bay. Ingenious lift system - it's all counter balanced so you're not fighting the weight. Both beds are off the ground too. The awning went up quick as well, once I figured it out.

Bit of a rarity. Built in Denmark, they're real popular across the Big Pond. Not many were imported to the states, and this model was discontinued some time ago.

It's a 1987, but always stored inside and seldom used. New tires. Clean title. Canvas is perfect. Torsion rod suspension, so it rides real nice. Couple that I got it from are in their mid '70s and just wanted to get rid of it.

What's amazing is all the other stuff they no longer needed and threw in with it. Lemme think ... Lanterns, fold up tables, chairs, dishes and utensils, coffee maker, hot plate, Coleman gas grill, extension cords, jack, grease gun for the wheels, a bunch of tools, sink station, and a bunch of other little stuff. Oh - and I showed up around dinner time and they threw in an excellent meal!

What's even more amazing is I wasn't really looking for it. Just stumbled across it on CL trying to find a tent. <G>

So, waddaya think ... worth $800?
