i 'personally' shoot as well with my glock 17 as i do with dad's glock 21 & 1911, and others i can't think of.

so That's why i settled with the glock 17 - on sale when i found it.

I've shot better with single action 22 revlvers though

like said above - it's all about 'you' and the 'gun' together, not what i think is the best gun.

edit: forgot to say - i've never seen a glock miss a beat. never had one jam. and THAT is why i paid the premium - nobody walks in my house uninvited and gets away with it. i still want a 1911 though

Im not saying by any means that the 1911 is the best for everyone, that would be a contradiction to my first post but to say they are outdated is just wrong. They are still one of the most popular pistol frames ever made and there are many ways to buy them now. Mine for example is a "mini" with a short barrel but has a double stack magazine. It holds 10 rounds of .45 ACP, 12 with the high cap mags and is small enough to carry and conceal. Its smaller than the glock .40's. When I was shopping for a carry gun I was looking for the most stopping power that could still be concealed. There are many great options, the S&W M&P's are great, XD's are nice but the compact 1911 was the one I liked the most because it had the best mix of size and the best stopping power (.45) of the bunch. You just need to decide whats most important. I sacrificed a little extra weight to carry with the heavier round but Im ok with that.

^^ I'll agree with that. I carry a glock 23 which is a compact .40 and the the compact 1911 was pretty close in size and felt alot better in my hands at least. Although I'd have it in a .40, don't like how the .45 fires. Not enough snap to it for me

I respect your tenacity and respect for opinion. Please forgive me for sounding snide in my previous comment regarding your personal choice in a 1911. I guess most of my opinion of the gun was based on how bulky every one I have ever handled was... I know it is a hard game of cards deciding which really suits your future purpose the best, however, my opinion on the 1911 was formulated on the lack of knowledge of the sheer customization of each gun.

Every 1911 I have seen has been LONG, fat, and heavy... not that heavy is really that bad of a thing, but fat and long (no pun intended) is only good to a point.


If you all wouldn't mind posting what you have picked up your pieces for in the past, that would be awesome

My 1911 champion is a 4" and also light weight.

It weights 2oz more then my XDsc .40 just FYI their is many 1911 versions.

I love both my 1911 and my XDsc. My XDsc has had over 7000 round plugged thru it with no issues.

I have owned both a Glock 17 and a Springfield 1911. I have always shot better with the 17 (loved it so much I bought the 26 to go with it) hence I no longer own the 1911. Preference is all it is. The only 45 ACP I have left is my Thompson. I have a soft spot for revolvers though and love my snubbie in 38 (Rossi 352). As stated though, what might be right for you, may not be right for some. As with women, handle and shoot as many as you can before you make a decision.

The other thing that is important, no matter what you carry or choose for self defense is PRACTICE. Having a gun doesn't matter much if you can't shoot it with proficiently.

i could pick up my glock 17 (cold) and shoot pretty good any day of the week and trust it won't jam. i could defend my home with it (can't say that about many other gun). i can't wait to mount the LED light/lazer combo on it!!!

The glock 17 is the first handgun I really learned to shoot. I feel more confident with it than any other I own. Practice and confidence is the key. Without those two things, any gun won't help much in a self defense situation.

you can get a cheap up for like 400ish but can spend an upwards of 3000 if you go with a GI Industries, Wilson combat or Dan Wesson. A Kimber will run you about 1500, but your average one will run you between 6-800 ish for a name brand (taurus,smith and wesson, colt)
