I've carried a Taurus PT140 Millenium, Glock 19, and now currently carry an XDsc .40. XD FTW. Love this gun. 0 complaints with it so far.

Re: Best low cost hand gun available...
First, if you want a good low cost gun go get a cop. Please tell us the price range you are looking to spend. To some low cost is $300 to others it is $1000. Please be a little more specific.

If you need a weapon to have any kind of external safety then do not touch any damn weapon. The only safety that needs to exist is your mind keeping you finger OFF the trigger. NEVER and I mean NEVER rely on a mechanical external safety.
As to your other questions I carry a Gen 3 Glock 19 9mm ($500) or a Ruger GP100 .357 Magnum ($500), my wife carries a Walther PK380 ($400).

thank you for saying that about the safety, joe. gotta force oneself to respect the weapon. the safety on a gun is not the same thing as a safety belt in the car.
i personally don't want a damn safety. if i'm pointing the gun, i'm trying to kill something, on fucking purpose.
sorry OP, i'm not trolling. just something i feel strongly about when discussing a good handgun...

Kimber had no idea that the SOLO would sell like it did.

Well I've come across a website called gunbroker.com (I heard it from a old coworker) and I seen a .45 for $150 the brand is hi-point I didn't buy it because I never heard of it then recently in an outdoors catalog I seen highpoint 9mm they were selling for a little bit more. But I'm pretty sure you get what you pay for

That's a nice looking carry gun. How much are you asking for it.
