Default Hunters: How do you count the points on a buck?

So how do you guys count the points on a buck? Add them all together, call it as one side (IE: if it has 4 points on both sides of the rack, it's a 4 point) or do you get technical and read it left to right (IE: 4X4)? I always grew up calling it as one side unless it was non typical, and then we would get technical. I noticed that a fellow member of a different Ranger board adds them all together, and I see some on here do it too.

The most common way is to count all of the tines (points) on the rack.

Another way, is called Western count, where they count (or state) the points on only one side of the rack (I believe it is the side with the most tines).

7 point

8 point

6 point

2 point (Spike buck)

I put them all together too, i thought when people said like 4x4 they just used that for elk, never heard deer referred too that way here.

Always thought you were supposed to count them al together, and only count a tine if you can hang your truck keys on it, lol.

we count them all together or side by side. so a 10 point is the same as a 5x5

Interesting, I have always been told that if it is a mule deer you only count one side and if it is a white tail you count them all. Unless it is on odd count then you call is as is 3x4.

The 8 point posted above fits inside my spike buck. I shot that when I was 15, back in '02... thats the only reason why I was able to shoot it. In PA if you are 16 and older, a buck must have 3 points on 1 side in order for it to be legal
