get a trek or gary fisher or a specialized, giant..NO mongoose

DONT buy into the 29er hype..they are nice and cool but its overhhyped imo and u should do research on them...

for ur height ur prolly looking at a 21 inch frame,im 5 11 and i ride 19 or 19.5

consider what kind of ridng u wnant to do...different riding calls for different bikes

i currently ride a specialized rockhopper...Ive ridden a trek 4500, gary fisher tarpon

mongoose is target brand etc etc they are cheap, unreliable...

give me some more info on what u WANT to do so that i can help u even more...helsp to narrow things down

----------

like for example...some people canthandle having no shocks in the back (hardtail) and prefer full suspension (shocks in rear and front)

others like me believe we have more control w hardtails over full suspensions

are u going mainly downhill? trail riding? combo of road and trail? cross country?

Mongoose are cheaply made and poor bikes, my nephew has one and he hates it, we do a lot of mountain biking here in Arizona, and its just not a good bike, I have a Univega and also a Specialized RockHopper, the Univega was my first bike my parents got me and I got the RockHopper off a buddy six months ago, its an amazing bike, also like Hazardous said Gary Fisher, Trek, and Giant are all good bikes too, just depends on what you are going to ride and how deep your pockets are.

okay then i personally recommend a hardtail, how much are u looking to spend?

disc brakes are very good upgrades to have, the most common mountain bikes have 21 or 27 speeds..i personally have had two 27 speed bikes just cuz thats how it happend but i love them so its allright

imo u have more control with a hardtail because it doesnt travel like a rear suspension would..i make it sound really bad but its not that bad. its just that the extra err....5 pounds is not worth it to me, plus its all ive ridden and im never in a sitatuon where id need to float over rocks and bumps (even if i was , id still take my hardtail)

full suspensions require a little more maintenance and stuff... oh and full suspensions take some of ur momentum away when pedaling

----------

if ur going for 300-400 ur better off looking at trek or gary fisher and maybe giant i forget what their starting point is

Like he said hardtail you have more control and less maintenance I have both my Univega is full, but I now ride my hopper 90% of the time the times I ride my Univega is to take it out still now and then. I don't want to sell it cause I will give that to my son one day!

Here is my 2cents:

I would stay away from trek and the larger brands. They are very expensive for what you get. Best example I can give is when I use to work at a bike shop (sold mainly road bikes) A brand named felt had just came out. A felt bike compaired to a cervelo was typically 400 dollars cheaper (same components).

Also, you need to figure out what kind of riding you are doing. A hardtail would probably be a great place to start. They are lighter AND more effecient (unless the full suspention has lockouts).

Also, as far as mongoose goes, if you get the top of the line (pro series) they really arnt that bad and a good bang for your buck. I just bought one for my first full suspention and for the price you cant beat it. I got sram x9 and hydro discs for 200 dollars (used). This is coming from someone who has a fisher.

also, i do agree. the 29ers are stupid

I own a Santa Cruz. Fabulous bike for the price. Id have to say that Specialized is way more expensive than SC. Working at a shop that sells both, I know for a fact thats true. For a decent hard tail bike, you can prolly spend close to 1000 for a really decent one. Itll be all aluminum, itll fersher run all if not almost all SLX Deore and itll have a spring fork (<---meh) and hydraulic disk brakes. Spend another grand more, you can get an entry full suspension that will be a lot better than the hard tail. Again, depends on the riding you do.
