I posted something this morning, guess it didn't work.
Habs is short for Habitants, referring to the first french settlers. The Canadiens were in large majority french speaking players from the province of quebec, average joes that were part of a population constantly harrassed by an english based ruling body that kept trying to assimilate them. Source of pride, able to battle and beat the best of them on the ice.
Ever since the exclusivity on quebec players has been lifted, the Canadiens haven't been the same, losing awesome players to other teams.
