The 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics Thread..
Well tonight they're airing profiles of the athletes involved with the 2014 winter olympics in Sochi Russia. Tomorrow night the opening ceremonies begin. Alot of historical events also happen tomorrow night. Jay Leno's supposedly last show is tomorrow night (we've heard that before, ) and Mom found a documentary on ESPN about a couple of weeks ago that caught my eye. I remember when it happened but I find that it's hard to belive that it has been 20 years since the Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding incedent in Lilly Hammer, Norway. I was a junior in Highschool when that happended in 1994.

Jay Leno is done, I believe. I don't care either way, but I don't see him easily coming back like before. I was a junior in high school in 93'/94' and I felt bad for Nancy Kerrigan - all that work to make it and all. Class act. Better than that trailer-trash Tonya Harding who felt threatened and entitled. For some reason, The Long Island Loita Story comes to mind. Remember that? The affair where the husband and his hooker conspired to kill his wife and they failed? Also, summer of 94' was OJ's infamous Bronco ride!

How could I forget the Loita affair. At least Al Cowlings took a Ford, L.O.L. Yeah Jay Leno teared up alot and alot of pretty famous people showed up to say good bye. Oprah, Carol Burnette and a few others. They also did a spoof on the presidents. The best one was when Bill Clinton put his hand over Obama's mouth. That was hilarious. At the end of the show he couldn't fight the tears anymore. He won't be back this time because they asked him to step down. They didn't ask him the last time. Tonya Harding knew about everything that went down. Her exhusband put the whole thing together. The only thing that Tonya really did was try to help cover it up (so she says). Even if that didn't happen, you would've gotten the same results. Of course Nancy Kerrigan isn't exactly a saint either. It wasn't long afterwards that a rude remark she made about doing a commercial for Disney World got out and they went to someone else for the commercial. Nancy Kerrigan lost alot of money after that.

That was messed-up about Tonya's ex being involved in the attack. I always thought Nancy Kerrigan was a class act. I don't remember the Walt Disney scandal. Maybe because of all the time that has passed since. Even Wikipedia is unclear exactly about the incident and says that she was 'passed over as spokesperson for Walt Disney'. I'm sure she did OK financially, though.

Kerrigan made money else where after the spokes person scandal. Tonya pretty much struggled for a good number of years afterwards. Once she was banned from figure skating, Tonya really didn't know what to do with herself. Yeah the mentioned this situation during the opening ceremonies. Team USA is not doing good at all this year. In fact they kindly suck.

It is early yet, and new sports were introduced. I follow summer games more than winter ones. I was watching the ski-flying earlier, and I can't believe that is a sport. Basically, it is ski down a slope and see who can stay in the air the longest.

Not what I said. And how many medals have you won? I just find that to be a rather boring event similar to some people's objection to golf.

True it is early yet, but I am dissappointed in USA's figure skating performances though. The women's snow boarding slope style was awesome. USA swept it with gold for both men and women.

That's not what he meant. He just thinks it's boring. If we were to try that, they might find us by next week, L.O.L.

That's my take on it. Golf is extremely boring to me and they're bring it back to the summer games in 2016 in Rio.

I actually used to be one of those people who hated golf. I can't really say why because I didn't try it until six years ago. Definitely different than mini-golf. I do watch a little on t.v., and my son loves to putt-putt (he is 4 1/2). Pairs skating was disappointing to me. I watched some snowboarding earlier. I am more into summer games because of swimming and gymnastics. I had no idea about golf coming to the next summer games. I wonder why.

For me golf is really boring. I've tried it on many occasions, but just couldn't take to it. It's unclear why the olymic officials decided to bring golf back to the summer games. I like watching the gymnastics myself.

Golf is popular or it wouldn't be televised. Also, I would guess that by adding it would make things more interesting and bring more fans which ultimately would bring more dollars. Sad but true.

Yeah it has it's own network and numerous magazines. Money had to be the main reason behind bringing it back to the olympics that and a chance to see some big name professionals come in. It's like with team USA's basket ball team. All of those guys are big named professionals from the NBA. I guess with the possibilities of getting pros in from the PGA was too appealing.

Yeah. I have mixed feelings about pros in the Olympics because they already compete in their league. But in some categories, there are no leagues, like skating. I guess the theory is that an Olympian is in essence a Pro because amateurs aren't going to qualify.

The definition of professional often gets confusing at times with certain sports and the olympics. I thought about entering in some archery competitions and getting into the olympics years ago. There's no way I can do that now.
