Advice for moving to South Carolina
Hello,
With the new year starting to unfold, I am looking at making a move to South Carolina. I have been thinking about it for several years now and I am now in a position where I can save up money and make the move.
I was just wondering for those in South Carolina and surrounding states if they had any thoughts on good places to look for jobs and housing. I would be moving with a friend to help split the bills. I would like to be near a large city but far enough away to avoid tourists. And from what I've read, the job market isn't the greatest currently unless your in the hospitality industry (which you can't make a living off of usually) but I'm more geared towards the customer service side of things. (I currently work full time at a marketing firm outside of Chicago and also have a second part time job at Golf Galaxy just for background). I've looked into Greenville, Spartanburg, Sumter, Rock Hill, North Charleston, North Myrtle Beach and Mount Pleasant so far but those are all large populated areas, so maybe ideas on surrounding suburbs. Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated. Being near the ocean doesn't rank high on my list, if I'm within an hour or two I'd be happy. Thanks in advance.

I've gone to Myrtle beach every summer since 95... Where we are is absolutely beautiful but to live there look into Conway and Carolina forest or even Marion

I've been to Myrtle twice, once when I was little and last spring when my buddies and I went down for a golfing trip. It was a blast! I have heard Conway is a great place, but I will look into Carolina Forest and Marion as well. Thanks for the suggestions.

I'd avoid north Charleston, but I'd avoid this state altogether honestly.

My buddy that wants to move down said he'd like to live in or around Charleston. Any good towns around there? Like I said, I'd like to live in a smaller town but still be close to a large metropolitan area.

Re: Advice for moving to South Carolina
I travel to the spartanburg/greenville area 2-3 times a month for work. I really like the area. If the wife and I didnt have a little one on the way I probably woulda moved down there if work allowed me to.

Well north Charleston is high in crime and a crap hole , I'd look into summerville or goose creek. I live in summerville.
I guess part of it is I'm tired of living here, its so flat, the humidity sucks spring fall. Hot as hell summers etc. I've been here 10 years and am just burnt out on it, ready to go back to some mountains.

Re: Advice for moving to South Carolina
I've always liked the Rock Hill and Greenville area's myself. Wouldn't want to live there though. Hilton Head Island is about the only place I could see myself moving to in SC. Have taken many vacations there, and it is a seriously gorgeous place, a paradise in the south, imo. As for finding decent employment, there are alot of people in the major areas that are constantly looking for work, so you'll have a lot of competition in pretty much every field unless you have an uncommonly held skill that is in demand, good luck.

Thanks for reply. I know jobs are scarce and that's what bothers me about moving. And hilton head or the surrounding are would he ideal because of how nice it is but agreed that it's highly unlikely it could find a sustainable job there. Thanks again for the tips.
Bump to anyone else willing to share advice.

Re: Advice for moving to South Carolina
Welcome!! I've been in Greenville for almost 3 years and I think it's the best place to live in SC. Job wise I think you have just as many (or more) options as the rest of the state (except maybe Charleston because of the shipping ports) but your smack dab in the middle of Atlanta/Charlotte and you're not much further drive from Charleston. Definitely try to find a job before you move though... takes out so much stress. What kind of work do you do now? Why do you want to move here anyway?

I'd honestly recommend Rock Hill for you then. It's only 20 minutes away from Charlotte and it's suburb's, which has quite a bit to offer in the way of employment, and especially entertainment. I have enough contacts here, that I can pretty much get anybody hooked up with a job as well, based on what their skills are, and how much I like them . GL to you though, wherever the road may take you!

Re: Advice for moving to South Carolina
Take a look at Greenwood. Medium size town with plenty to do.
Large lake for fishing , swimming and skiing . Lots of jobs available and it is really close to Greenville, Anderson, Augusta Ga.
lander College is located there with plenty of Young folks to share a good time.
