Default Sas

Ok so i just want to Straight axle my ranger, nothing really crazy just a D30 from an XJ. I would like to do coils instead of the leafs but thing is lack of Fabricating tools so i would have to pay a shop to do it. But if this is out of the price range i would just do the Rustys 4". So what im wondering is what would be a price difference and if i went with the SAS how road worthy would it be?

Dana 44 in front, Dana 60/Ford 9" in the rear. Many Dana 44s came set up for coils. (old Ford trucks like my 69 Ford 1/2 ton)

Good luck on your build.

Yup the d30 isn't the strongest axle. However it is better than halfshafts and ifs. I have yet to break mine and its been through plenty of trails as has the one in my xj. Leave the d30 open run a normal size tire (35s and down) and it will last just as long as anything else.

Coils vs leafs...I like the ride of mine. All of the link work and buckets were all custom fab as is the front driveshaft. If you 4 link off the stock xj mounts pay for the double sheer tracbar it is the first thing I broke on mine offroading.

If you click on my name and go to photos there are a good number on there of the front end of mine.

Anyone who complains about the weakness of a d30 and has not destroyed their ifs has no idea the strength differences. I personally went through 2 full sets of halfshafts and a hub on mine with proper maint. and 33s.

super 30 kit is still cheaper for me than getting a D44 the correct width up here. i dont want full widths and for a budget build i wouldn't recommend going full width vs a D30HP swap.

Ford 9 inch is the best route. They are built great. As for the front D44.

so is a 31 spline ford 8.8 in fact its known for being as strong. especially when you chromo shafts and look at the super 88 kit with a c-clip eliminator and the bigger outers. they are also alot lighter and have a great gear and locker selection that tends to be cheaper than 9" parts.

Thats an ass load of work compared to just being able to swap in a complete Niner.

----------

but i do agree on them being lighter and cheaper for parts.

am very calm the one thing that the D44 really comes in over the D30 IMO is lower gearing 4.88s is even at the point when they become brittle. the larger D44 doesn't have that issue.

Yes, see i have always built up XJ and always did D44 set up but these were toys i was strictly trail rig. Now my ranger i want to do the D30 cause i am only using it for DD and mild offroading. I live in florida, there aint no rock or mountains here. And i wouldnt want the full with axles either. Im set on D30 if i do comit to SAS. My main question is the price difference in The D30 setup vs the IFS 4". And also the most on road worthy. Being as ill be driving it on the highway at 80mph.

ive done both and if your even thinkin of a sas......do that.

the SL costs upwards of 1100bucks...

for that price you have your axle and the main essencials.

but thats my opinion.

itll drive as good as you build it. but ive had my truck up to 100mph...basiccally what my motor topped out at (no governor)...and it rode fine. felt plenty stable!
