Default Pre 98 Solid Axle Swap Q's

Hello, I'm soon to be getting a 2wd 5spd ranger. not sure what engine, don't really care. my quesions are.....

I found a '78 bronco Dana 44 axle. I've been told that will work.
- Is this true?

Do I need a new trans & t-case? or what?

I plan on doing the coilover on the SAS, so, would i need the radius arm from the bronco as well?

Well, 78 bronco is Full width. It's a difficult swap, but certainly doable. You will need the radius arms and track bar for that axle or go aftermarket with Cage (or simular) arms and track bar. You will need the rear axle from the donor truck as well to match the full width and bolt pattern. Depending on what size tire you'll be running is the only thing I would be worried about with the stock drivetrain. If you do keep it, make sure it's a 4.0L 5 sp ranger combo.

I am current doing that same SAS on my 02 ranger with the same parts. It does work but you need to decide on a good plan, meaning as for the D44 has a wider spring mounting location than the 2wd ranger so either you will have to build the upper mounts out further from the frame or relocate the wedges for the radius arms on the axle. The same for the spring perches on the 9" rear axle. And since you are converting a 2 wd into 4wd yes you will need the transfer case too, easiest way on that is to get one from a 4wd ranger since it will bolt up with less hassles. you can check out my photos to see some of the work involved in doing this.

Ok, thanks for the info. If I don't want the width of a bronco, could I go with a jeep front axle?

doin a sas really isnt that hard. especially since you already have a steering box.

a manual tcase will work easiest for you.

just dont expect the axle widths do match up.

Personally I'd go with a D44 out of an older jeep (usually low pinion) or a D44 out of an Early bronco (high pinion) Id look for the High pinion if I were you.
