Default Axle conversion

Hi, I have a 1991 ford ranger , 4cyl, manual 2wd. Im wanting to make it more then capable to rock crawl hence the main purpose of the truck. Since is a 2wd I going to convert it to 4wd drive so my question is what's the best way to go with this. Jeeps are really good so I thought maybe I could find a donor Cherokee an take what I'd need but I'm not sure what all I need for the axles , drivetrain, t case an tranny? Any help and advice would be great this is my first project an vehicle I don't want a shop doing it cause where's the fun in that right ? Lol thanks in advance (:

Hi, welcome to the forums!

Sounds like quite a project - way to dive right in! It's a great way to learn.

4wd conversions seem to be one of the common questions. From what I've read on here, the most common consensus is to buy a new truck. But like you said where's the fun in that?

From what I've read on here, it seems like you're replacing a significant number of components - transmissions, transfer cases, axels, suspension components, etc. Dont let that discourage you though. Some people on here have done some really interesting things. After all, it's your truck. Do what you want with it, and post pictures so we can all see! :-)
