I agree. If we have a chat box, everyone will quit posting. But then again the forum won't be such a cluster fuck either.

Except the forum is not a clusterfuck now.

The purpose of the forums are to ask questions and receive information to answer such questions and if all the discussions happen in a chat box where nothing is recorded for future reference that can be potentially damaging to the forum. We have a Facebook page that has a chat feature so I suggest you join up there and chat away. http://www.facebook.com/groups/165251766859754/
Agreed. While it sounds like a winner it would lead to a less substantial knowledge base in the future as questions are answered in the chat instead of a thread.

Also, have you ever chatted on the FB page....... not exactly stimulating conversation. It would be a tragedy to introduce that disease to this page.

Numerous questions are posted here with the member saying they are asking a "quick question" when really they are not. Plus, it just makes for a better experience as the forum allows more users to input their ideas, and future users to find such discussions when searching. Also, if a user has a "quick question" and the initial solution doesn't work it's just so much easier to continue the diagnoses when you have that archive of what was suggested/done.

This. The last time we had a chat it was the go to for new users to ask their questions, and then they would get upset/disappointed that there was no response and gave up on the forum.

It's no mystery that it often takes users a while to adapt to proper forum etiquette (EG: posting in the right section, creating proper sections, etc.). So regardless of what is said, a chat room will become a tech support section, again.

Yes, and that is an issue as well.

Part of the reason the BS threads have so many posts is that, unlike a chat, a user can scroll through older posts to catchup on the conversation. Or respond to something older and keep it going. Where as a chat is essentially real time.

perhaps a trial period to see how things roll. I would think most of the current users who had technical questions will still post a thread in the forum. Its not like its a brand new forum just starting out. There is already a pretty damn good knowledge base which almost all questions have been asked at one point or another. Turning a chat box into a technical discussion would most likely be left to noobs and those who have never been part of a forum. I dont think that our seasoned veterans of the forum will turn the chat box into this. If it does occur, im sure many a people will say, "make a thread" just as how so many say "use the search" function on repeat threads about, tires, wheel sizes, lift, etc, etc. I dont think a simple chat box would be the down fall of this forum.

Im also willing to bet the majority of the chat use would be fromt he late night/bs crowd, not saying thats all that will use it, but I think most will. Further more, it would be nice if your on frf and have a chat boxed pulled up to say "what the hell is going on FRF!" rather than make a new thread in the BS section.

What is the cost to run such a feature? if its like $1/day, than thats of course to much, but maybe like, .02 a month? I honestly have no idea on how to run a forum and associated costs
