Tom, this would make a good sticky to help those new to a forum understand how one works

That's a good link Scott but it's not noob friendly. Many of the new users who seem out of place are that way because they have no desire to be learn or be part of a community, they simply are trying to rush through to get an answer to their question. They wouldn't really care about what a troll is, proxies, history of forums, etc.

IMHO, my http://www.fordrangerforum.com/site-...ger-forum.html thread which is forced upon all new users is more efficient. It's basically, straight to the point how to do things here.

my idea has been, that a mod has to "approve" all new members. (any new member on initial sign up, will be diverted to a special page that only a moderator can view)
The new members must make a signature and tell the mods in no less than 100 words why he/she wants to be a member here. sounds silly, but I feel if you really want to be an active member (not just someone with one question, then never post again) you should be able to tell the mod why you like this forum and want to be a member.

Agreed because I probably wouldn't have joined, I just wanted a quick question answered and didn't have any intentions of sticking around but then after a while I realized I loved it here seeing everyones truck and learning about all kinds of stuff.

I know i originally joined a forum back in 06, posted my question and that was it. never got any answers or anything. Then i never revisited until I bought my new truck. shoot I had forgotten that i was on a forum.

I then started lurking around and finally became active and now im on probably 17 forums ranging from fishing to boating to rangers to phones

although that would weed out trolls and spammers there would certainly be less members that would join because of it as well as create a ton more work for us. (mods/ admin) i see your point but i agree with Scott, the forum would never grow. i know i would never join a forum that required me to write an essay to join and i certainly wouldnt have several years ago when i joined my first forum because at the time i had no idea what they were all about and i just needed a quick answer. Ive got no issues with people that join with the intention of asking one question because a certain percentage of those people will end up sticking around and contributing to the forum.

I see your point, but could you imagine what other forums or clubs in society would be like if you could just join and that was it?
Imagine if all it took to be a freemason was to "sign up" or to join the Elks, or the Boy scouts.
Imagine this happening:
(hey, we have a new member, but he doesn't participate, but he signed his name, so we have to accept him)

dont you think that comparing on online forum to an organization like the elks or the free masons as bit of a stretch?

somebody once said this when i made a comment about not letting new people do stuff.

If some guy walked into a bar, would you not let him have a beer just because he just got there? No.
So making new members have a post count before they do something or anything is just not the way to do it. You just got to realize there are gonnna be people on here that only want to sell one thing and be done. I was one of those people. I had no intentions of staying on here. But shit happens and i'm still here. It's hit or miss really.
