Default Clean out classifieds

Just putting it on here maybe more looks, but can we clean out the old classifieds? You don't know if some are still viable or if they are sold or whatnot. Start over so we can get a handle on what one is looking for and if that person even has that truck or comes on the forum anymore. $.02

If a guy is searching deep into the classifieds I can understand it might get a bit frustrating with the open-ended information....but it's really up to the OP to update the thread status when an item is sold and/or no longer available.

Same frustration happens when someone is researching a tech issue that the OP doesn't post what solved the issue for him/her.

Back on the topic of the classifieds: The potential buyer can look at when the thread was created to judge and they can see the last time a member has logged into the site (by viewing the OP's profile) - to get a better feeling for their recent activity.

Just 'cleaning out' the old classifieds by a random date is a hard line in the sand to create (what would the cutoff be? 30 days? 60 days? 120 days). We would potentially delete still active items as part of the housekeeping.

Worst case - the potential buyer can send a private message to the seller to verify if they still have the product. As random examples: Some sellers keep things forever & others toss them after a week if they don't sell.

For me, the biggest indicator is the age of the thread & OP's activity.

If an item is for sale longer than a month or two - I would recommend sending the OP a private message due to it not being "recent" anymore.

This.

It's nearly impossible for an outside individual to know if the seller/buyer is still interested/available for a transaction.

Logan covered the dilemmas pretty well. But just to kind of reword a major point, there's a number of users who are "kind of" interested in selling something. So they don't actively bump their thread, or promote their item for sale or etc. So they will list their item(s) and weeks/months can go by, until eventually a buyer comes along and inquires about purchasing that item.

There is also a benefit to keeping old classifieds around. It allows users to research the market a little. See what is being bought and sold, and at what price. Granted, ideally this would all be separated from the "real" classifieds but as mentioned previously, drawing that line is the sand is not so black and white.
