Re: Oil filter change on 3.0 V6

I enjoyed your sense of humor. I'll try to remember to read your post right before my next oil change, to get me in the right frame of mind.

Re: 2003 Ford Ranger serious trans leak.

I have heard of leaking servo covers on rangers, but I have not looked into the solution because it has not happened to me. It seems hard to imagine that the only solution is a reman transmission. ...

Re: Oil filter change on 3.0 V6

That could be what the plastic piece is for. I wouldn't think a little oil would hurt a starter, but maybe the windings are open for better cooling.

Oil filter change on 3.0 V6

I have just changed oil in my 3.0 V6 Ranger 2wd. I like to change oil hot to get the max junk out. Changing the oil filter is a problem hot or cold. I remember thinking the last time I changed...

Re: Ring and pinion gear replacment or...

You can always tell if a dealer is lying. If his lips are moving, he is lying. Rear ends are a very robust part. If they are in bad shape they will whine, do repeated clunking, and in general...

Re: 97 abs light wont go away

The ignition switch usually has to be in the RUN position for the reader to communicate with the computer. I know because I have puzzled over why the reader could not communicate, only to find I...

Re: Spongey Front End Suspension

My guess is that you have too much pressure in your tires. That will make it feel squirlly on the road as you are running on only the tread in the center of the contact patch. Too high a pressure...

Re: u joints...

Vibration at 60 is more likely to be a tire out of balance or out of round. In my experience drive shaft related problems are worse at 40 to 45 mph.

Re: OD off Light flashing (2000 Ford Ranger 4x4 4.0)

The OD light flashing means that it has set a transmission code, as I understand it. I believe you will have to have it read by someone with special equipment, like a dealer or transmission shop. ...

Re: rear brakes adjuster kits...

They adjust when you brake while backing up. Adjust the star wheel until you can just slide the drum on. If your adjusters are working they will tighten a bit with use. If they become looser...

Re: Need some help/suggestions on upgrading/fixing my ranger

The vibration at 70s is likely a tire balance or out of round problem. The engine has nothing to do with it.

A new engine would cost more than the truck is worth, as would a new transmission...

Re: rear end whine?

A rear end that is noisy when pulling and quiet when coasting, is typical of a worn rear end. I would expect a worn pinion gear, but worn bearings is also a possibility. It takes some skill to...

Re: Front brakes locking up

It sounds to me like the rear brakes are not working, causing all the stopping to be done by the front. Perhaps the proportioning valve is plugged up. I don't think there is any way for a brake...

Re: Hard 1-2 up shift and down shift when warm

The valve body gaskets, there are two, are a problem in the late 90s trucks. There is a TSB that Ford issued where the gaskets and separator plate were replaced with a plate with gaskets glued to...

Re: tranny question

Given your situation, I would loosen the valve body bolts where the gasket is sticking out, push the gasket back in, and re-torque all the valve body bolts. Then you can come back to the...

Re: tranny question

That is a sign that you have blown out your valve body gasket. It must be replaced. There are two, but Ford has a TSB for the problem which involves replacing the separator plate with one that...

Re: 1998 Ford Ranger shakes and vibrates when making sharp turns

Do you have it in 4wd on a dry road. That will make it shake on sharp turns. You didn't say whether you had 4wd or not. The type 4wd on Rangers is to be used only on low traction surfaces like...

Re: Beginner Discussion - Transmission Binding/Driveline Wind-Up/Part-Time 4x4

If it is jerky when you turn, the road is dry and you should NOT be in 4wd. As you mention, even with a snow cover, it will swing wide on a corner in 4wd. I shift into and out of 4hi when I am...

Re: Switched ACC power

I think most radios have two sources of power, one on continuously to hold the presets and one to switch it on with the key. I recently tapped into the fuel pump relay to get switched power for LED...

Re: Ranger vs. B4000 Cruise Control switches?

The cruise control switches on my '99 Ranger work fine but they have become very hard. I understand that they were once soft plastic. I guess the plastic has lost it's plasticizer. I wonder if...

Re: 97 ford ranger 4x4 loud noise drivers side front wheel

What you describe sounds like a brake pad wear indicator. When the pads wear down the wear indicator contacts the disk and makes a squealing noise that stops while the brake is in use. Some pads...

Re: auto trans. VSS vs. ABS

You might want to double check what transmission you have. I would have thought that in '97 it should have been a 4r55e, with the 5r starting around 2000. However, your door sticker should have a...

Re: Rear Drum Brakes

If they are working well, I recommend that you leave them alone. If you do not have experience with brake shoe work, you are fairly likely to screw something up. New shoes can have a tendency to...
