I would check for a worn out idler arm and tie rod ends first along with the steering shaft u-joint.Also check the ball joints if the steering wheel is not centering when driving.

I would rotate the drive shaft and check for slop in the transfer case chain.You can also check the oil in the case to see if it has any metal in it or if the case is dry.

There should not be any noise when driving in four wheel or two wheel drive.There could be something wrong with the transfer case.

New u-joints don't wear out that fast.Pull the drive shaft again and check that the u-joints are free and installed correctly and check for a bent front yoke.Check for rust at the diff mounting...

I think it's overpriced by at least two thousand dollars.My 2006 fx4 with 78000 miles is only worth $7500. to $8500 dollars.And it's clean with no rust.

White smoke at times signals antifreeze going into a cylinder .Keep a eye on the antifreeze level.Could be a bad head gasket or cracked head or intake gasket.
