Sometimes clutch slips?

Full story: 1994, 4.0L, 5-speed, 120,000 miles. Going up a hill, fully loaded, the clutch slipped and the engine revved to about 4000 rpm, then caught gradually and was OK. 3000 miles later same...

The manual says if it's the driveshaft then driveshaft rpm, not engine rpm, determines if and when it will vibrate...so if you can go the same speed in 4th and then 5th...say 90-95k/hr and it...

Can you tell if (when?) the clutch needs replacing before getting stranded in the back-country? The clutch works fine now. If this is a stupid question, then I'd like to know that too. I'm thinking...
