It could be a blend door problem as far as the trickle of supply air. If the system was completely out then adding charge won't work well without pulling a vacuum first.
What are the pressures?...

I owned three Rangers and logged over 175000 or more on each and never had a problem with a heater valve on any of them.

This valve is a part that really needs to be OEM.

Something tells me that you need to get a pro to get your a/c up and running. "AC line thing" LMAO!
If the system has been open that long, then the compressor is most likely toast.

Run a #4 wire from the alternator bracket to the frame. Always start with easy stuff first. Check battery and voltage with engine running.
