Had this very problem just today, The cable actually broke. Caused the auto adjust to fail. Had to rebuild the entire brake assembly. Drum, pads, cylinder and all of the hardware.

Yes but as well when all three of the breakers are removed...??? Shutting down the abs system makes no difference at this point at all. ???
