The Auto has a switch just like the manual. It may require two people but a test light and an extra foot stepping on the brake pedal should be able to tell you if any signal going into the switch...

On the fender near the battery should be a starter relay solenoid. Some times the older ford cables would go bad but I think by your year they cleared that up with a better grade of cable.
