Re: How-To: OHC Install

The -40 display means that the console is getting no usable input from the ambient sensor. For most installations, this means a poor connection to the Ex sensor but, in your case, it is probably...

Most common source is 95~2001 4-door Explorer. Other possibilities are 95~03 Explorer Sport and 2001~05 Sport Trac.

95~97 have a more bluish display. 98+ console displays are green.

There were...

If you are sure that all of the new wiring is sound, then the problem could be a poor solder connection on the PC board. This a not an uncommon problem with these consoles.

Re: How-To: OHC Install

It is much easier to use the color coded pigtail cut from the Explorer harness. If you are stuck without one, all is not lost.

Here's my post from a few years ago:

Re: How-To: OHC Install

It is fairly common for the console to have cracked solder connections on the PC board. That can kill the display. If you're good with a soldering iron, it is not hard to fix.

VSS Violet/orange = pin 3, NOT pin 9.

Some connectors have all of the pin numbers marked. Some only mark the #1 pin and you can count from there to find #3.

Re: How-To: OHC Install

This is not correct for 2005. You have connected the console's VSS wire to a 12V source, not to the truck's VSS pulse.

The VIOLET/ORANGE VSS wire color code is for 2007~2011 ONLY.
2006 and...
