Most common source is 95~2001 4-door Explorer. Other possibilities are 95~03 Explorer Sport and 2001~05 Sport Trac.
95~97 have a more bluish display. 98+ console displays are green.

Are you talking about the first large 3-segment LED character? The shape is such that it can display a "minus" sign for negative temps and a 1 for triple digit positive temps. I'd say that it's...

If you are sure that all of the new wiring is sound, then the problem could be a poor solder connection on the PC board. This a not an uncommon problem with these consoles.

Re: How-To: OHC Install
It is much easier to use the color coded pigtail cut from the Explorer harness. If you are stuck without one, all is not lost.

Re: How-To: OHC Install
It is fairly common for the console to have cracked solder connections on the PC board. That can kill the display. If you're good with a soldering iron, it is not hard to fix.

Re: How-To: OHC Install
VSS Violet/orange = pin 3, NOT pin 9.
Some connectors have all of the pin numbers marked. Some only mark the #1 pin and you can count from there to find #3.

Is the console VSS wire tapped into the gray/black at the GEM? If not, the console will not update the temperature regularly.

Re: How-To: OHC Install
-40 means that the temp sensor circuit is open. Recheck your connections. If the connections are good, the sensor itself may be open and need replacement.

Re: How-To: OHC Install
This is not correct for 2005. You have connected the console's VSS wire to a 12V source, not to the truck's VSS pulse.
The VIOLET/ORANGE VSS wire color code is for 2007~2011 ONLY.
2006 and...

These two wires run directly between the overhead console and the ambient temperature sensor, completely separate from the truck harness:
