Re: Explorer 5.0 mounts in 98 3.0 2wd ranger
Not unless the RWD is the Edge or Sport model with torsion bar front suspension.
The coil spring Rangers need custom mounting plates and the spacer under the left mount must be removed.

Re: Things they don't tell you about a V8 swap
For me, the $550.00 custom 2 piece driveshaft was the big surprise.
I'd waded through wiring diagrams till my eyes bled. Read and researched as much as I could. Savaged a couple wrecks in a...

Re: 1998 5.0 explore into a 2002 ranger 4.0
Hmmmm:
PATS. Expo has an extra module behind/above glove box. Will need to get wired in.
Speed signal. 02 Ranger uses the PCM to generate a speed signal from the ABS sensors. The Expo uses...

Re: 1998 5.0 explore into a 2002 ranger 4.0
Any '96 - '01 5.0 Explorer makes about as good a doner as any other.
All combinations have challenges to overcome.
PATS, a speed signal, a/c control logic and fuel system pressure and return...

Re: 2001 ford ranger speedo
Its more than knowing how fast you're going. Its the PCM that is controlling the transmission knowing how fast the vehicle is going so it can manage the operation of the transmission.
No speed...

Re: 2001 ford ranger speedo
Yep, its a gotcha.
The Ranger speed signal left with the 01 Ranger PCM but the Explorer speed signal stayed with the Expo ABS system.
Handfull of options:
If capable, add a gear driven VSS...

Re: Need info on possible 4.6 swap 2002 XLT
The 4.6 is an easy fit, as long as you don't need a/c, brakes, steering, exhaust manifolds and a radiator.
Yea, it's been done, but not without a ton of mod and fab work on all the bits that...

Re: Two wheel drive edge V8 options.
Pinging, particularly with the 3.0 is often from carbon buildup. Ford fought for years to ease the 3.0's penchant for the carbon and resulting pinging.
There are no plug and play Expo 5.0's for...

Re: V8 swap follow ups?
Hmmm, did mine about 2 1/2 years ago, about 40,000 miles or so.
I usesd a crashed '96 Expo with it's RWD 4R70W transmission as the doner.
Only real surprise was fuel economy. Went from about...

The generic Ford Performance Parts rear sump oil pan will work -- but not with the OEM Explorer front catalytic converters. Also, it can interfere with the steering rack unless the engine is spaced...

Re: 5.0
Getting an Explorer 5.0 into a coil spring Ranger is not that tough. One of the hard parts is finding a V8/302 RWD doner.
An AWD 4R70W transmission can be rebuild to RWD spec, but requires a new...

Re: explorer motor ?
Then yes, PATS is a player.
Couple paths:
Add the PATS module from the doner. Should be able to re-use the Ranger's type E key sensor but will need type B keys. Easiest if the original 99...

Re: explorer motor ?
Depends: '96 and '97 Explorers did not have PATS but the '98 - '01's will need PATS wired in and key that matches the PCM and PATS module.
After that, I understand the PCM also needs to have the...

Re: 2001 Ranger V8 Swap
B type adds the PATS module from above the glove box.
Both B and E types use the same transceiver at the ignition switch but I believe the keys are different.
B type key blanks are easy to find...

Go with a later Expo 5.0 hose. Think it was '99 they eliminated the oil cooler filter adapter and went with a one piece bottom hose.

I've done it a couple times -- didn't see it as that much more difficult than any other pull.
But...I pull with the transmission still bolted to the engine.
Pop off the front accessory brackets...

Re: 2000 3.0 ranger v8 swap
Nope, the Jegs kit is for the pre-1998 Rangers. The later trucks have a completely different front suspension and engine bay frame rails.

Depending on the transmission, fitting an in-line VSS from an earlier Ford might work if the trans has a cable drive for a speedo.
Or, adapting an Explorer's ABS based system is possible as is...

Re: 2003 2.3 to LS swap
I'm not sure on the '03.
I know on the 02, the temp gauge is direct off the sensor, and on the 04, it's not.
I think the '03 is the same as the 02, at least RockAuto shows the same temp sensor...
