Re: Need help with heating problems on my 89 Ranger
The reservoir is not just for overflow. It puts coolant back into the system when needed.
When temps get cold some people cover 10-50% of the radiator to keep the engine warmer, depending on how...

Re: Losing power in 2.3l motor going up slightest hill.!?!
It's normal considering the bigger tires that you have.
Going back to stock gearing (either by changing tires or gears) will give you a little more pep but don't expect a HUGE improvement. The 2.3...

Re: Losing power in 2.3l motor going up slightest hill.!?!
Good point. low profile tires can change the final gear ratio without changing the wheel. But they are expensive, and sacrifice ride comfort. (they tend to give a stiff ride)

His 93 2WD came with 14 in wheels.

195/75/14 are 15% smaller than the tires he has. Thats about 15% less power than the truck is supposed to have.

Re: Losing power in 2.3l motor going up slightest hill.!?!
I was suggesting different size wheels/tires instead of swapping the rear end. Same result for less money.
It's just an option to consider..

Watch craigslist, you'll probly find a set of wheels with decent tires for $200-$400. And then you could sell the ones you have now..

Re: Losing power in 2.3l motor going up slightest hill.!?!
The difference between 3.45 gears and 4.10 is also about 15%.
I think your truck came with smaller tires and at some point bigger rims and tires were installed for looks, or extra ground clearance....

Changing the gears, or putting on smaller tires will give you more pep at the expense of MPG on the freeway.

The difference between the largest, and smallest tires put on the 1993 is 15%. That's a big loss of power.

Re: Losing power in 2.3l motor going up slightest hill.!?!
2WD or 4WD?
That size tire is standard for 4WD trucks. 4WD is great to have, but the extra parts add weight and resistance, the bigger tires kill acceleration even more.

Re: Losing power in 2.3l motor going up slightest hill.!?!
What you're describing sounds almost normal for a 2.3l.
Whats the gas mileage like? If you're not getting 20-25 mpg, something is wrong.
What size tires are on it? Bigger tires will kill your HP.

Sounds like your coolant is low, or has air in the system.

That may go to the PCV valve. Try removing the wheel and plastic splash shield to get at it.

Re: 1995 2.3L power issue.
What has the fuel economy been like? If you're getting low MPG, there's something wrong.
Start by checking the compression and fuel pressure.
My 2.3 accelerates fine (usually empty with stock tires)

Bad starter. hitting it with a hammer may help temporarily, but get a new/rebuilt one installed.

Re: 97ranger 2.3 sputters when pushing th gas
Sounds like it needs a tune-up.
Several things could cause that.
Dirty fuel filter, dirty air filter, old spark plugs or a dirty sensor.

At 105, thats not too surprising.
I would look into improving you cooling systems efficiency. Flush the radiator and use a new mix of 70% distilled water/ 30% antifreeze.
here's a good article on...

Radiator cap,

You should also keep the reservoir (plastic tank) filled to the line as well.

Re: Coolant temp gauge bad??
Air in the system could cause those problems.
With the engine cold, remove the radiator cap and run the engine for 5 minutes adding coolant as needed to keep it full.
