I just wrapped the splines on the shifter with a few layers of electrical tape and pressed the knob back on it. It was a little difficult to press it on with the extra layers of electrical tape but...

The 2.3 is known for running pretty cold. mine never makes it out of the first 1/4 of the needles sweep. So you may not actually have a problem. If its not heating up enough to go into closed loop it...

You should definitely avoid the autolite plugs. They are garbage. All of them. Motorcraft is the only thing you should be running as far as plugs go.
Duralast wires should be alright, but again...
