Auto Trans slips in first, feels like an extra shift

I have '99 XLT 4x4 offroad 4.0 wiith 154,xxx miles.
The 4 spd auto feels like it's shifting out of first gear but then keeps accelerating, then shifts fine through the gears.

I want to up grade from my slow '96 2.3 to a 4.0
I read an ad about a '98 for sale that claimed it was the last year of
the "bulletproof" iron block & Heads.
I would prefer a newer year with 4...
