well sounds like you have bad oil supply to the top if their was carbon build up on any of those parts.
ive opened some 2.9s up like that and saw carbon. my one which has never been rebuild has...

yeah just gasket match it, and get smooth out the insides, grind down the injector bosses that come into the manifold.

gasket match the upper intake to the lower, and the lower to the upper and...

well no point buying plastic again, so yeah gonna get a new one. friends and family have had them fail on explorer, f150, and pretty much anything with plastic sides.. i blame the damn pot holes in...

I hate plastic sided radiators. they always fail. 2 myself and bunch of people i know.
always where the plastic meets the aluminum. tired of it, time to go full metal and get rid of the problem!...

follow the wires coming off the distrubutor. youll find a little plastic brick looking thing. its just a shorting clip. just pull it out. ooooooooooor google it ;)

its the same thing for my 91 2.9l. the headers were only being made up to 89-90.. but same engine as the 91-92 2.9s.. doubt much is different either.

its the distrubotor. you didnt get it 1 tooth off. its pretty hard to do that! lol
you said it idled at 500 rpm. so you didnt have the right timing..
disconnect the spout connector. turn the truck...
