Re: Engine tick: Something? Nothing? Timing chain?!
The symptoms of that motor are classic for disregard on timely oil changes or a sludge problem. The Tick is lifter noise because the oil pressure isn't proper when the oil is cold. As the Engine...

Re: What did you do to your ranger today thread IV
Today I crawled under the back end and adjusted my drum brakes. I've owned the truck for two years, bought cheap in may 2013 with a bad motor. 160k on the 4.0. Yes it took me almost two years to swap...

Re: front end noise 2003 4X4
If anyone is interested I went ahead and replaced the passenger side hub assembly last Sunday. Turning the original bearing by hand was noisy enough, no wonder it was bad at 60. I've changed dozens...

Re: Runs fine, then no start?
The problem with just changing out sensors and parts is that noone has determined the real problem. Get a meter from harbor freight and you can determine the real problem with a basic understanding...

Re: hard to crank when cold/ codes po171 po174
This is the same motor as the Taurus/Sable. I've had 6 Tauruses and for real, pull the intake plenum and look at the elbow on the egr tube, or maybe it's the pcv tube. it's a rubber 90 degree elbow...

Re: Newbe 97 Ranger 3.0 engine obd codes
I had those same codes with a 3.0 in a Taurus. I didn't like that my truck had a car motor but that motor, under the intake plenum has a rubber elbow for the egr, or maybe pcv, but that elbow fails...

Re: 1991 3.0L V6 Fan clutch replacement
I've dealt with this on my 1998 with 3.0. I went out and bought the fan clutch tools and busted my knuckles over and over with no progress. Best thing you can do is use a punch bit on a pneumatic...

Re: front end noise 2003 4X4
Yeah, it comes as an assembly. I've pretty much landed on changing the passenger side assembly under the assumption that the noise is the bigger indicator than the direction of the turn to quiet it...

Re: '96 4.0 swap into '03 with 4.0
OK, I bought a new motor with 80K, now my old motor is stripped down to the block and heads in the truck and before I make the swap I feel like I should deal with the common stuff before I bolt it...

Re: '96 4.0 swap into '03 with 4.0
Didn't get to cut out early Wednesday to pick up the truck, but I borrowed an F250 Diesel and my dad's tow dolly to go get the new Ranger tomorrow! Five hours each way from upstate NY to Mass, I'll...

Did you get this Fixed? I have a '02 Sable that though it was the 3.0 it has the same elbow off the pcv that was bad. I bought it cheap because of the rough idle assuming it was just a vac leak but...

They're not the worst. I put a pump in a '99 Explorer for a buddy two months ago. Three bolts to drop the tank, two hoses and the electrical plug. It's easier with the spare tire out.
Even easier...

I haven't seen it happen in awhile but over the years I've had water pumps go bad and the sign they were shot was the seal leaking on the pulley shaft. The cooling fan can make a mess of things but...

Re: '96 4.0 swap into '03 with 4.0
I'll have to look at the Explorer sometime this week, but I should probably just part the thing out and scrap the body. I can't stop trying to diagnose the '03 with the little info I have. Chatter...

Re: '96 4.0 swap into '03 with 4.0
Sounds reasonable. I have to pick the truck up on saturday. The guy said it does run but makes a horrible chatter and stalls at anything under 2500 rpm. I suppose there's a chance it can be fixed but...

'96 4.0 swap into '03 with 4.0
I have a totaled 96 Explorer with 4.0 engine, runs great. Just bought an 03 Ranger with 4.0 engine that's bad. Did the block and or heads change enough that I shouldn't do this swap?

98 Ranger with 3.0, swap 4.0 from explorer in
I've read post after post about why not to do this but I think I'm in a good situation to make the swap. I drive a 98 Ranger 3.0 4X4 manual trans with 167k and I have a 96 Explorer with the 4.0 4X4...
