Re: Stay in the Ranger...or get an F-150

I prefer to touch all of the topics. :-)

I think we've had our about 5 years now--we bought it with 45K miles, as it was just too much to pass up the miles for the price.

The renix system seems...

Re: Stay in the Ranger...or get an F-150

TALF bit didn't bother me as it wasn't a financed bankruptcy. Also, I'm biased. If I based my transportation buying decisions on whoever didn't get any money whatsover...well, yeah, I'd be walking....

Re: Stay in the Ranger...or get an F-150

A well-worn 3.0, no less. It's nice not living in a city--I'm that guy slowing everyone else down. Can't fault the 3.0's effort after 210k miles, though.

The 5.4 spark plug and timing advance...

Re: Stay in the Ranger...or get an F-150

Savage thinking. But what of the Fiero, XJ, Lincoln LS...five cars is too much to retain my dignity. ;-)

Stay in the Ranger...or get an F-150

Probably more of a philosophical question...but I'm tired of just thinking things over in my head and wanted to get someone else's thoughts.

I've put around 210,000 miles on my 98 Ranger. I like...

2008+ torsion keys

Does anyone have a set of OEM 2008 and up torsion keys? I am looking for a set so that I can lower the front end of my 1998 Ranger more than its current keys will allow.

Re: Gabriel Max Control shocks review

Reviving this thread to do an update.

The Gabriel Max Control shocks are done after 36,000 miles. The ride is harsh, and the bounces are back. Bumps unsettle the vehicle, and turns feel...unsure?...

Re: 4wd issue--back end loose, tries to come around

I found the problem--the guts of the passenger side hub on the front axle had *fallen apart,* for lack of a better description. I am uploading a video of the problem to Youtube as I type. I thought...

Re: 4wd issue--back end loose, tries to come around

I thought about removing the rear driveshaft just as a way of disgnosing. That's a good idea--I'll give it a short try!

Re: 4wd issue--back end loose, tries to come around

The snow can be anything from snow packed roads to 6" of snow. Either way, the rear tires are worse than just being along for ride.

Sounds like snow tires, more weight, and a limited slip would...

Re: 4wd issue--back end loose, tries to come around

This makes me wonder if the Jeep XJ has some kind of LSD. I haven't opened up either differential on the vehicle, so...hmmm... That could explain the difference. If it weren't so cold, I would go...

Re: 4wd issue--back end loose, tries to come around

Thanks for the reply! This might be a dumb question, but how fast does a limited slip differential react? I've always thought they were too slow to help in a case like this, but that's an...

4wd issue--back end loose, tries to come around

I have an issue with my 1998 3.0 4X4 Supercab Ranger.

When I drive on snow, I have very little traction. Even when I have 4wd engaged, the rear tires lose traction very easily, which makes the...

Re: Spark plug electrode wear

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the explanation.

The old plugs were Bosch double platinum plugs. The new ones are Motorcraft double platinum. Maybe I'll gain half of one horsepower back ;-)

Re: Air Lift 4x4 Ride Control kit

As far as I know, it will work on a 2wd. It mounts to the leaf springs rather than the axle, so there wouldn't be a problem.

That's exactly how the Gabriels feel. They are not stiff--they are in control. Control makes all the difference.

Re: Gabriel Max Control shocks review

I wish I had some first hand experience with Bilstein 4600's, but I just couldn't justify the cost at this point. But I'd imagine you're right.

I'm looking forward to seeing how long these last....

Re: What's going on with my front control arm bushings?

That looks pretty normal to me. The only time I've ever had to replace bushings was when my old alignment shop said the bushings were too worn to align the vehicle (this was not on a Ranger). Even...

Gabriel Max Control shocks review

I recently installed Gabriel Max Control shocks on my 1998 Ford Ranger. This is the initial review.

The vehicle had been riding on KYB Excel-G shocks since March of 2011. Since that time, I have...

Re: Air Lift 4x4 Ride Control kit

It doesn't increase the gross vehicle weight rating--what it does is allow the vehicle to carry its maximum capacity while remaining level. This makes for safer (or at least less exciting) driving...
