Looks like I didn't give myself enough credit. Might not have been anything wrong with my job on the water pump last year. I think it was the thermostat housing leaking down onto the pump.

There definitely seemed to be deposits around the water pump (I've already removed it). How would I tell if it was the timing gasket?
