If the engine temperature is good then the actuator door my be broken and not moving fully open/closed. Common problem with rangers. Napa has replacement door for less than $20 if thats the problem.

Check your antifreeze. May causing cyl to lock on pistons but hopefully not freezing hard enough to crack the block. If it was a weak battery it would just turn over slower but should start.
