Re: Lowering with Explorer Axle - questions?

Well, I wrote up an article on lowering with an Explorer Axle. No welding and everything is working great with the exception of the parking brake.

I got a 4 or 5 inch drop in the rear. I'm...

Re: Lowering with Explorer Axle - questions?

Well, after waiting for a month for the cheap salvage yard in town to pull out a rear end for me I bought one somewhere else.

With some help from my Uncle I picked up a 8.8 rear end out of a 1998...

Re: Lowering with Explorer Axle - questions?

Thanks for the link Casper. That is one of the other threads I have read. He states " but if you get two of one side, you can rotate one 180* and it will work for the other."

I have read in a...

Re: Lowering with Explorer Axle - questions?

Yeah, I almost laughed at the guy on the phone when he threw out that price. No idea what all he thought was involved in welding those on.

I have not had great experiences with shops in my area. ...

Re: Replaced Aternator, Now can't get belt tensioner back in place ?

Don't feel bad. My brother and I once changed an alternator on a car 3 times in 2 days.

Pulled the old one, took it to a parts store and got a new one. They took my old one for a core charge.

Re: Lowering with Explorer Axle - questions?

I called the two welding shops I found listed in town. One will not touch a vehicle, and the other wanted around 700 to weld shock mounts on the axle.

All else fails I may see about renting a...

Re: Lowering with Explorer Axle - questions?

Picture of the truck. Just for fun. Doesn't look bad for having 230k on it.

Lowering with Explorer Axle - questions?

I have a 1998 2wd Ranger Supercab. The truck currently has a 7.5 rear axle that is failing. Ford wants $800 or so to install a new seal on it, so instead I am buying an 8.8 Explorer Axle.

I have...

Re: Am I just polishing a turd?

Some guys just like jumping from one new vehicle to another. They are never happy with what they have.

I'm more of a buy what I like and then drive it until the wheels fall off kind of guy. Much...

Re: Used rear end - mileage?

Thanks for the encouragement. I think I may call the yard and see what they have again today. If they still have the 150k I may buy it and hope it lasts the winter.

This yard has a 2 week...

I'm trying to hunt down a used rear end before winter. I'm planning on going to an Explorer 8.8. Does anyone have recommendations for how low of miles I should be looking for?

My current 7.5 has...

Re: Jack stand placement for a rear end swap?

Awesome. Thanks for the help guys. Already have a rear end going bad, didn't want to make it worse by bending the frame.

Going to install an explorer rear end as soon as the salvage yard can...

I'm about to replace the rear axle on my 1998 Ranger extended cab. Can anyone tell me if this would be a proper place to put a jack stand on the frame? This point would give me the highest lift on...

Re: rangers are no longer being made

It's not so much about a V8 ranger, its about not putting excitement into their cars and trucks. If you want something exciting they try to push you into a Mustang or F150.

As for the towing...

Re: rangers are no longer being made

I think the real question here is why Ford wasted money developing a truck that is close enough in size to the F150 to compete with it. Why not simply sell the F150 in those markets. This make no...

1998 Ford Ranger Gauge Cluster?

My 1998 Rangers speedometer is starting to malfunction. It seems to stick at the bottom once in a while, and you need to smack the dash board to get it going. It only sticks once in a while, but I...
