First step, clean your MAF, change the air filter. That is what caused it in my 97. Mind you I have the 4l V6, but the engine management is the same. Don't use brake clean, there is MAF cleaner at...

I assume you cleaned the MAF?

These trucks (93-01 4.0 V6's) are known for popping the valve seal, I just had the heads redone in mine about three years ago. Check the leak down, and compression....
